Fundamental Investigations About the Suitability of Corn Straw in Chemical Looping Processes

Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is promising method for achieving negative CO2 emissions. The main drawbacks are high energy demand and competition for. Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is one of the most energy efficient methods for the production of a almost pure CO2 stream available. Furthermore, a novel adaptation of the CLC process is currently developed at TU Wien, to produce pre-heated and pre-reduced iron ore. Corn straw is investigated as fuel for the CLC process, because it offers a large untaped potential without competition. The fuel analysis of corn straw confirms the high ash content found in literature but reveals a better-than-expected ash melting behavior. Experiments in a batch reactor were conducted to simulate CLC operation. The ash did not lead to fluidization problems and did not impact carbon conversion at high temperatures. However, the experiments revealed a negative effect of the ash on the carbon conversion at low temperatures.
