Intermediate Crops: Unlocking Additional Sustainable Feedstock for the European Bioeconomy
Short Introductive summary
Intermediate crops, which we define as crops planted and harvested in the time between main crops in a rotation, offer a major opportunity to produce additional feedstock for renewable fuels and the wider bioeconomy without expanding agricultural land. Their inclusion in Annex IX of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) establishes them as a key option for meeting Europe’s renewable fuel mandates. While technical potential and agronomic benefits are large, market uptake and timely scale-up requires certainty around certification and policy frameworks ensuring long-term market perspective.
