Alkaline and Enzymatic Strategies to Valorize Eucalyptus Kraft Lignin Into Sustainable Biopolymers
Short Introductive summary
The search for sustainable alternatives to fossil-based plastics has increased interest in lignocellulosic biomass as a source of biopolymers, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Lignin, an aromatic macromolecule and abundant by-product of the pulp and paper industry, has low reactivity and high molecular weight, limiting its microbial conversion, especially in hardwoods like eucalyptus. This study aimed to improve the accessibility and bioconversion of eucalyptus kraft lignin through combined alkaline and enzymatic treatments. The approach enhanced lignin solubilization and enabled its use by Pseudomonas putida for PHA production, contributing to the development of sustainable lignocellulosic biorefineries.
