Biomass Valorization from Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soils for Nanolignin and Nanocellulose Production

This study evaluates the potential of sorghum and hemp grown on heavy metal-contaminated soils as sustainable feedstocks for producing nanolignin and nanocellulose. By assessing biomass composition and extraction efficiency, the work demonstrates that contamination does not significantly affect lignin or cellulose content, supporting the feasibility of integrating phytoremediation with high-value nanomaterial production. These findings contribute to advancing circular bioeconomy strategies through innovative biorefinery approaches on marginal lands.

PhD in Biotechnology (Instituto Superior Técnico, 2023), researcher at NOVA FCT. I develop sustainable processes for valorizing lignocellulosic waste, focusing on nanocellulose and nanolignin, combining biotechnology, microbial ecology, and circular economy strategies.
