Regional Pathways for Bio-based CO2 Removal: A Storyline Approach for Germany

Short Introductive summary

Achieving climate neutrality in Germany requires both emission reductions and active CO2 removal through bio-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods. This study treats bio-based CDR as a portfolio challenge, combining technological options like BECCS with natural sinks such as soil carbon sequestration. It develops regional scenario storylines reflecting differences in biomass, infrastructure, and social perceptions, integrating stakeholder input, literature review, and a PESTEL + biomass framework to identify key drivers. Four storylines emerge: cost-efficient deployment, decentralised and natural-sink focus, a high-deployment “skyrocketing” future, and a low-uptake “roadblock” pathway. They show that regional context shapes feasible CDR strategies and that combinations of methods are most effective. By embedding social, environmental, and policy dimensions into regional narratives, the framework moves beyond national studies. Forthcoming quantitative modelling will estimate removal capacities and trade-offs, supporting integrated policymaking for Germany’s climate-neutral transition.

Ms Wollnik researches bio-based negative emissions in the working group Biomass in the Energy System at the German Biomass Research Center. She studied Sustainability Science (M.Sc.) and Chemistry (B.Sc.). Her methodological focus is indicators and scenarios for an integrated technology assesssment.
