Seasonal Variability of Almond Hull Residues: Optimising Post-Harvest Dehulling for Sustainable Energy Recovery
Short Introductive summary
The study explores the potential valorisation of almond hulls, an abundant agricultural by-product within the framework of the circular bioeconomy. It examines how seasonal variations in almond harvesting (summer vs. autumn) affect the physical and chemical properties of hulls and their suitability for energy production through thermochemical and biochemical processes. By analysing dehulling performance, into two different period, particle size, moisture content, energy yield, and methane potential, the research identifies how harvest timing influences conversion efficiency and energy recovery. Results show a seasonal variability of harvested hulls, mainly as regards moisture and higher energy values, offering different performance for bioenergy production.

Presenter's biography
Dr. Alberto Assirelli has a PhD in Agricultural Engineering in 1997 and start working in the Department of Economics and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Bologna, continuing his works in other public and private research centers. Researcher in the Agricultural Engineering Unit (CREA-ING) of the Agricultural Research and Experimental Council (CREA), in Monterotondo (Roma). Author of more than 400 publications in the fields of agricultural mechanization with particular reference to the development and testing of new machinery for food, feed and energy crops.
