Short Introductive summary

The Horizon Europe project Micro-Bio-CHP (Grant Agreement No 101083409) develops an innovative combined heat and power (CHP) system for multi-family buildings, integrating a compact biomass updraft gasifier, a solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC), a novel gas-cleaning unit, photovoltaic (PV) generation, and intelligent thermal and electrical storage. The system is designed to achieve almost complete energy autonomy, supplying space heating, domestic hot water, and electricity – including e-mobility – entirely from renewable sources. This contribution presents results from the final environmental and techno-economic impact assessment, to be completed in early 2026. The analysis combines validated measurement data from prototype testing, final techno-economic analyses provided by the project coordinator BIOS Bioenergiesysteme, and scenario-based stock modelling developed by the Wuppertal Institute, following the European Commission’s Impact Assessment Guidelines. The final validated results, available in March 2026, will provide a robust scientific basis for the full paper as well as for future policy recommendations.

Thomas Goetz is Co-Head of the research unit Energy Policy at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. He studied at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, with focus on environmental economics, industrial ecology as well as energy- and material flows.
