Assessing CO and Particle Matter (PM) Emissions and Associated Toxicity when Using Woody and Agricultural Bioresources as Fuels in a Portable Cookstove

Short Introductive summary

This study collected and characterized gaseous emissions and fine particles (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0) generated when using wood and agricultural pellets as fuels in a portable cookstove device. Four biomass representative of the main biomass families were selected for the study (softwood, miscanthus, shrublands and rice husk pellets). CO and PM emissions (TESTO 380) associated with their use in a portable cookstove device with or without a 5L-cooking pot were analyzed in an experimental rig (ISO 19867-1). The obtained results showed that total CO and PM emissions quantified guarantee a safety use of wood and agricultural pellets as fuels in the cookstove in agreement with WHO recommendations (Tier 5 for CO emissions, Tier 4 to 5 for PM emissions). Next steps of the study are currently focused on the PM sampling by particle size distribution and consequent physicochemical characterization, so as to link particle size and composition to micro-gasifier fuel thermal profile and emissions, as well as to fuel properties.
