Metric Choice Matters: Rethinking Methane Emissions And Biomethane’s Contribution to Climate Targets

Short Introductive summary

This study compares and applies multiple climate metrics to evaluate the climate impact of biomethane substituting natural gas across various emission scenarios. The analysis integrates climate impacts of methane supply chains (both biogenic and fossil-origin) with projected methane use from 2025 to 2050. The scenarios explore different methane leakage reduction pathways—from Business As Usual and EU policy-compliant trajectories to idealised low-leakage conditions—using harmonised methodological boundaries.

PhD Alessandro Agostini is an environmental scientist. He is currently Head of the Sustainability of Energy Technologies unit in the Energy Technologies and Renewables department (TERIN-STE) in ENEA. He has 25 years of experience in assessing the sustainability of energy technologies.
