Humic Acid Extracted from Sugarcane Filter Cake Enhances Early-Stage Phosphate Uptake and Modulates Hormonal and Transporter Responses in Tomato under Low-Phosphorus Conditions

Short Introductive summary

Phosphate (Pi) deficiency is a major constraint on plant productivity, particularly in highly weathered tropical soils such as Oxisols and Ultisols, where Pi is immobilized by iron and aluminum oxihydroxides. In the sugarcane-producing region of Campos dos Goytacazes (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), soil fertility has declined severely, with low organic matter ( 1%) and available P (~ 4 mg L?¹). Enhancing Pi acquisition under these conditions is essential for sustainable agriculture. Plants respond to Pi limitation by modifying root morphology, activating high-affinity phosphate transporters, and adjusting hormonal signaling. Humic substances (HS)—complex organic fractions of decomposed organic matter—can improve Pi uptake by increasing its solubility and stimulating root development through auxin- and H?-ATPase–mediated pathways. Humic acid (HA), a major HS fraction, acts as a biostimulant that enhances plant growth and nutrient efficiency via physiological and molecular mechanisms. In this study, HA-like material extracted from sugarcane filter cake (a sugar industry by-product) was tested as a sustainable biostimulant aligned with circular economy principles. The research aimed to (
