Potential of Biomass-Derived 3-Hydroxypropanoic Acid (3-HP) as a Bio-Based Chemical: A Techno-economic Assessment

Short Introductive summary

This study demonstrates biobased 3-HP production through continuous process via the ß-alanine pathway with an annual capacity of 30,000 tonne. The achieved theoretical yield rate of the 3-HP product through this process was 49 % per gram of sugar. The levelised cost of the 3-HP acid was estimated $2602 per tonne for corn stover feedstock using the main indicators of technoeconomic assessment such as 6 % discounted cash flow rate, 3.5 % maintenance cost and 25 years plant life.
