Leveraging the Netherlands Plant Eco-phenotyping Centre (NPEC) for the Assessment of Bio-Based Fertilizers and Biostimulants under Climate Stress Conditions

The global fertilizer crisis, intensified by geopolitical disruptions and the scarcity of mineral nutrients such as phosphorus, highlights the urgent need for sustainable and circular alternatives to conventional fertilizers. Bio-based fertilizers and biostimulants—derived from organic and microbial sources—offer promising solutions to enhance nutrient efficiency, soil health, and plant resilience. However, their adoption is hindered by limited mechanistic understanding, inconsistent performance, and the absence of standardized evaluation and regulatory frameworks. This work proposes a conceptual framework that leverages the advanced phenotyping infrastructure of the Netherlands Plant Eco-phenotyping Centre (NPEC) to establish data-driven, function-based bioassays for assessing bio-based fertilizers and biostimulants. NPEC’s integrated platforms—combining controlled-environment chambers, rhizotron systems, automated imaging, and field phenotyping—enable comprehensive monitoring of plant growth, nutrient uptake, and stress responses from molecular to ecosystem scales.
