Fuel production from biomass and hydrogen

Production of Renewable Aviation and Marine Fuels from Wood-Based Pyrolysis Oils through Hydrotreatment

Short Introductive summary

The utilization of wood-derived pyrolysis oils for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and marine diesel involves several technical challenges, such as high oxygen and water content, chemical instability, coke formation, and catalyst deactivation. Although pyrolysis oils represent a promising class of renewable liquid intermediates, these properties hinder their direct integration into refinery processes. Therefore, upgrading stabilized and partially deoxygenated pyrolysis oil (SDPO) through hydrotreatment represents a critical step to enable refinery compatibility of biomass-derived feedstocks.
