Hydrothermal Carbonization of Digestate: Influence of Temperature, Residence Time, and Solid to Water Ratio on Hydrochar Yield, Aqueous Phase and Filtration Performance

Short Introductive summary

Anaerobically digested feedstock is one of the most challenging input substrates owing to its complex composition, pathogenic organism presence, and ash content, and needs to be introduced to a straightforward and circular thermochemical pretreatment and energy-intensive process. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of manure digestate originating from a local biogas plant (Biogas Wipptal GmbH) is examined in a lab-scale batch reactor, with focus on how operating conditions affect hydrochar yield as well as aqueous phase (AP) distribution and filtration performance during slurry separation.
