CO2 Valorization as a Key Driver for the Techno-Economic Feasibility of Syngas Injection into Natural Gas Grids
Short Introductive summary
This study, conducted within the Interreg AIHRE project framework, examines the thermochemical gasification of residual biomass—specifically olive and forestry residues—for producing hydrogen-rich syngas suitable for renewable gas grid injection. It combines hydrogen purification and CO2 valorization in a unified techno-economic assessment to improve both sustainability and profitability. An economic model was developed to estimate CAPEX, OPEX, LCOE, and key financial indicators (NPV, IRR, PBP) across different financing scenarios. Incorporating CO2 valorization, valued at €1.20/kg for industrial use, markedly enhanced the system’s performance: the NPV became positive, the IRR rose to 10.03% (above the 8.3% discount rate), and the PBP reduced to 18.55 years—well within the 25-year project lifespan. Overall, the results highlight CO2 utilization as a critical lever for improving the techno-economic viability of biomass gasification, supporting EU decarbonization targets, and advancing a circular carbon economy.
