A Model-based Approach of Combined Microalgae Cultivation and Hydrothermal Liquefaction Processes Supported with CSP

Short Introductive summary

This study presents a model-based approach for the integrated design and simulation of a microalgae cultivation process coupled with a solar-aided hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) system for the production of biocrude. A macroscopic process model is developed to evaluate alternative flowsheet configurations, identify key design and integration challenges, and assess the synergy potential among the involved subsystems, in accordance with the principles of sustainability, resource efficiency, and zero-waste operation. The proposed process framework constitutes a representative segment of the broader concept envisioned under the EU Research Project SUNFUSION, which aims at the holistic and synergistic valorisation of two oleaginous biomass types, microalgae and yeasts. Within this framework, the produced biomass is subsequently upcycled through HTL for biocrude generation and upgrading, targeting the production of renewable marine and aviation fuels. The overall system is designed to be powered by renewable energy sources, particularly concentrated solar technologies (CST) complemented by thermal energy storage, thereby ensuring operational flexibility and enhanced energy self-sufficie
