Prospective Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Bio-based fuels: A Forward-looking Assessment based on ENTSOG and ENTSO-E Prospective Scenarios
Short Introductive summary
The current energy system largely relies on the combustion of fossil fuels to generate electricity, but the massive deployment of renewable energy systems based on solar and wind is paving the way for a growing generation of electricity. This development could lead to the production of electrolysis and bio-based fuels during periods of abundant weather-dependent renewable electricity production, which could then be used to decarbonize the gas grid, power flexible back-up power plants, or be used in the transport sector and hard-to-abate sectors. A study has been conducted to assess the prospective greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of bio-based fuels, relying on the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) scenario developed by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) and the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E).
