Inclusive Design of Sustainable Biobased Value Chains: A Capability-Sensitive and Context-Specific Approach in East Africa.
Short Introductive summary
The implementation of biobased technologies is still hindered by social inequality, limited stakeholder participation, and concerns about fairness and justice. This research examines the role of Capability Sensitive Design (CSD) in establishing biobased value chains that promote social justice. CSD was applied to two cases of early-stage design of cassava and maize-based biorefineries in Uganda. The cases from different local contexts are presented to illustrate the design choices that would be made when local capacities and capabilities are at the core of the design, and to examine the implications of this approach for social justice in the BBVCs. The study presents a proactive, participatory design approach that embeds neglected criteria such as procedural, distributive, and recognition aspects of social justice into the initial phases of bio-based system design.
