GHG Emissions of Innovative Technologies Providing Biomethane and Value-Added Products from CO2
Short Introductive summary
The SEMPRE-BIO project is researching innovative and cost-effective technologies for producing biomethane in order to promote the circular economy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Three case studies demonstrate these innovative biomethane production technologies with biogenic CO2 valorisation at different process stages. At EUBCE 2026, the greenhouse gas (GHG) balances and mitigation potential of the three innovative case studies will be presented. The first part of the presentation will address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It will identify key drivers across the different stages of the process chain and include a comparison of scientific and regulatory approaches to assessing and classifying product streams comprising biogas (an advanced biofuel) and hydrogen-based methane (a non-biological renewable fuel). In the final part, the focus will shift to evaluating CO2-derived products and exploring possible certification options for these value-added products. The analysis will also cover potential substitution and displacement effects relating to the use of feedstock, such as the diversion of biogas from wastewater.

Presenter's biography
Katja Oehmichen has joined the DBFZ in 2008. Since 2012 she is part of the department Bioenergy systems.Her expertise is carbon footprinting of biofuels and bio-based materials and the development and standardisation of methodologies for sustainability assessment.
