Short Introductive summary

The amending Directive 2023/2413 (REDIII) elevates the ambition for decarbonization, updates and aligns the RED targets for 2030 with the more ambitious climate targets which was reflected on the thresholds of minimum GHG emission savings from bioenergy. Along with the latest policy developments, JRC updated the GHG emissions from biofuels and bioenergy pathways. This entails the inclusion of new pathways and introducing more recent findings as regards the evaluation of the climate impact. This offers a detailed method for accounting methane emissions in biogas production, with default values for best and standard practices, criteria for best practices, and consideration of methane losses throughout the supply chain, presented in this paper, with detailed methodology and background research.
