Low Grade Biowaste for a Biobased Economy. An Inventory for the Netherlands

Short Introductive summary

Large amounts of low-grade biomass contribute to waste, economic loss, and greenhouse gas emissions, while countries like the Netherlands remain dependent on fossil feedstocks and rare elements. Decarbonizing industry requires replacing fossil-based carbon sources with renewable alternatives. Biogenic waste offers potential, with high-grade residues like agricultural and food waste suitable for conversion into high-value products such as biofuels, and low-grade waste requiring more processing. By 2050, Dutch material demand will exceed 143 PJ, with manure and green waste providing significant energy potential. Developing a biobased economy will require advanced conversion technologies and improved recycling of low-grade biomass resources. The ABEL project aims to develop spatial datasets on manure and mixed wet waste streams to support a biobased circular economy by 2040. It will identify collaboration opportunities with research partners, waste producers, and technology operators. Through interactive engagement with stakeholders, the project will create value chain scenarios that quantify the potential of low-grade residual biomass within technological, economic, and social limits
