Assessment of Forest vs. Agricultural Pruning Residues for Fluidized Bed Gasification in the Lazio Region
Short Introductive summary
An assessment of the main territorial databases of the Lazio Region was carried out to evaluate the average annual availability and geographical distribution of pruning residues, both agricultural and forestry. From this analysis, poplar (forest biomass) and olive (agricultural biomass) emerged as the most representative and consistently available resources. These two biomasses were therefore selected as target materials for the experimental phase. Both were used in gasification tests performed in a prototype fluidized bed reactor (1.5 kW), designed for the thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. The resulting syngas was analyzed in terms of composition (H2, CO, CH4, CO2) and contaminants, with particular attention to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), tar compounds and Heavy Metals. In parallel, the residual biochar generated from the process was characterized and used in agronomic tests to assess its soil amendment potential.
