A Decision Support Framework for Sustainable Business Strategies in Scaling Novel Biobased Technologies
Short Introductive summary
This study presents a decision-support framework for scale-up of novel biobased technologies within companies developing sustainable products/processes. The framework accommodates detailed technical requirements within a digital process replica. Digital replica enables frequent simulation of process scenarios, generating techno-economic data and inventories for life cycle assessment (LCA). We then establish an iterative cycle including the steps of: (i) refining digital twin, (ii) driving process design towards lower environmental impacts, (iii) adjusting business strategy to improve sustainability indicators, (iv) implementing design decisions in practice and generating new data for (i). The framework enables implementation of science-based targets for simultaneous co-development of technology and business strategy. We exemplify this framework on a case study of Seprify AG, a deeptech company specializing in manufacture of sustainable bio-based materials. The framework was used to guide the development of scaled-up process design and of business strategy for its deployment, achieving an 89% reduction in green-house-gas emissions from baseline.
