Valorization of Urban Tree Pruning Residues: Carbonization of Ficus benjamina Biomass at 400-600 °C for Biochar Production

Global energy consumption is projected to increase from 418 EJ (2019) to 516 EJ (2040), intensifying fossil fuel depletion and greenhouse gas emissions. Municipal lignocellulosic residues (MLR) from urban green maintenance represent an understudied bioenergy source. In tropical and subtropical cities, inadequate MLR management through burning or landfill disposal creates environmental concerns. Thermochemical carbonization offers advantages over biochemical processes, yielding 45-50 kgoe per ton versus 9-13.5 kgoe through anaerobic digestion. Ficus benjamina, widely used ornamentally and requiring intensive pruning, potentially generates 26-76 GWh annually. This research explores carbonization of F. benjamina pruning residues at 400-600 °C, evaluating physicochemical properties, yields, and surface characteristics for sustainable urban waste valorization.
