Biogenic Co2 Industrial Point Sources and Emissions in the Rfnbos Value Chain: An Analysis Regarding the European Regulation

E-fuels are produced using hydrogen and CO2, to ensure their sustainability, hydrogen must be produced with low emissions, and a closed carbon cycle must be maintained through the use of biogenic CO2. European regulations set for 2041 mandate that e-fuels be produced using CO2 from Direct Air Capture (DAC) or biogenic sources. Furthermore, biogenic CO2 offers potential for net-negative emissions when integrated with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). However, a significant information gap exists: no comprehensive database currently maps the spatial and temporal availability of fossil and biogenic CO2 sources in Europe, posing challenges for developing CO2 capture, transport, and storage infrastructure. This study addresses this gap by mapping current and future point sources of biogenic and fossil CO2 across Europe, projecting their evolution toward 2050, and comparing these sources with the potential CO2 needs for e-fuel production. A bottom-up methodology was employed, combining data collection and processing from multiple databases on CO2 emissions, industrial production, and energy use. The dataset encompasses the geo-localization of industrial plants across key sectors.
