Circular Ecnomy: Valorizationoff Mango Peels for Obtaining Nanocellulose (CNF)
Short Introductive summary
The increasing need to valorize agroindustrial waste and the pursuit of sustainable solutions motivated this study, which aimed to evaluate the use of Kent mango peels for cellulose nanofibril (CNF) production, a material with potential application as reinforcement in composite matrices. A 2³ factorial experimental design with center points was employed, with temperature, time, and sulfuric acid concentration as independent variables. The methodology included sample washing, drying, sieving, alkaline treatment with NaOH, bleaching, and mechanical treatment. Acid hydrolysis was performed using H2SO4, followed by ultrasonication, washing, dialysis, and freeze-drying to obtain CNF. Structural characterization and size determination were conducted using FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, and laser diffraction analysis. CNF yields ranged from 85.12% to 99.20%, with the highest yield achieved at 2% sulfuric acid concentration. Enhanced fibrillation was observed in sample T8, corresponding to the highest acid concentration. Particle size reduction from 65.9 µm to 21.2 µm was achieved. FTIR and SEM analyses confirmed the cellulosic structure and successful nanofibrillation
