Fractionation of Industrial Eucalyptus Residues: Aqueous vs. Organosolv-Based Strategies

Short Introductive summary

Eucalyptus globulus is one of the most widely cultivated tree species in the pulp and paper industry and the second most commonly processed hardwood in Europe. Several by-products are produced during its industrial processing, the most noteworthy of which are E. globulus wood fines, accounting for up to 17% of all processed biomass in the industrial facility. The efficient and selective direct production of added-value chemicals from the major macromolecular components (hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose) of this feedstock will enable the profitable biomass valorization. In this work, autohydrolysis and DAH, as well as organosolv and the combination of the two strategies, are developed and their performance compared in the upgrade of eucalyptus fines, and the selective recovery of high-value lignin, hemicellulose-derived products and cellulose fractions.

Presenter's biography

Principal Researcher at the Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit of LNEG and a former Coordinator of the Biomass Deconstruction Programme. Her research interests lie in the development of pretreatment processes for the selective fractionation of different types of biomass (lignocellulosic and aquatic).
