Turning Polluted Lands Into Energy Fields: Environmental Aspects Of Biofuel Crop Production
Short Introductive summary
Dedicated energy crops play a crucial role in decarbonizing the energy sector and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as targeted by the European Green Deal. However, the overall greenhouse gas performance of bioenergy systems can be undermined by indirect land use change (ILUC) effects. The growing demand for biomass often intensifies competition for arable land, potentially threatening food security. To mitigate these issues, the cultivation of industrial crops on contaminated or marginal lands has been proposed as a sustainable strategy to reduce land use conflicts and ILUC-related concerns. This work sought to assess the site-specific environmental impacts resulting from the cultivation of selected ligncellulosic crops on contaminated land, using environmental impact assessment (EIA) protocols, which addressed yields, fertilizers and pesticides related emissions, impact on soil and water resources and biological and landscape diversity.
