Biomass systems integration
CSP-Biomass Hybridisation for Dispatchable Power Generation: Thermo-economic Assessment for a Fixed Biomass Operation Strategy.
Short Introductive summary
CSP-biomass hybridisation is a promising option for providing 100% renewable dispatchable energy to electricity grids. However, the operational intensity required of biomass boilers to adjust to solar generation profiles may limit their viability. This paper analyses the techno-economic performance of several CSP-biomass hybrid plants that follow a base-load strategy for the biomass block and a complementary generation strategy for the solar block. The results showed that these systems can achieve capacity factors comparable to those of base-load plants, capable of providing a reliable supply of electricity. The inclusion of thermal energy storage systems significantly increases the manageability and solar fraction of this type of plant. However, these systems also imply specific penalties in terms of the net electrical efficiency of the systems and their economic performance, with an increase of up to 0.012 in the LCOE compared to the base configuration (No-TES). These results call for further analysis of these and other possible configurations of hybrid plants in which the trade-off between solar and biomass resources may have a more attractive performance.
