Biomass and waste combustion as sustainable strategy for decarbonization
Gasification of Solid Biomass for the Production of Hydrogen-enriched Syngas and for high CHP Efficiency Applications through SOFC
Short Introductive summary
The objective of the work is developing a technology based on biomass gasification for CHP production by feeding a SOFC. Residual biomass, biogenic fractions of waste and HTC pretreated feedstocks are all considered of interest to conceivably increasing its adoption and spreading. The considered gasification technology is based on a prototype plant designed for intensified steam/O2 gasification in a FB reactor. Moreover, it is characterized by the presence of a HT gas filtration system housed directly in the freeboard of the gasifier. By using tar reforming catalysts and a HT module (HGC) designed for gas refining and reduction of inorganic contaminants (i.e. H2S and HCl), the syngas will be given technical specifications suitable for feeding a prototype SOFC module. In line with the general aim of producing a high-quality H2-rich syngas, the work program also includes activities on more leading-edge aspects, such as development of CO2-sorbents and innovative approaches for syngas refining based on the use of catalytic foams. Different scenarios for distributed power generation from biomass and other and other non-programmable renewable sources are being studied.
