Biomass conversion into bio-based chemicals and high-value compounds (part 2)

Techno-Economic and Exergy Analysis of a Sustainable Process for the Purification of Furfural from Biomass

Short Introductive summary

Furfural as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) can help to overcome the transport and storage limitations due to the low mass density of hydrogen. Nevertheless, the conventional process for synthesizing furfural results in an aqueous azeotrope, making its purification highly energy-intensive. Therefore, this work aims to design a sustainable process for the production of furfural from corn cobs, with a focus on the purification of furfural by reactive distillation using a green solvent (MIBK).
