Developments in Fuel Quality of Commercially Available Wood Briquettes from the German Market between 2010 and 2023

Short Introductive summary

The study investigates possible advances in fuel quality of commercially available wood briquettes in Germany that happened due to the introduction of ISO 17225. Thus, it directly addresses process optimization and advanced fuel production for commercial bioenergy applications. During the winter of 2022 / 2023, TFZ and HFR conducted a market study on the fuel quality of 38 wood briquettes for small scale combustion units. The data was compared to a previous screening of wood briquettes that was conducted by TFZ in 2010. Aim of the study was to examine whether the fuels comply with the quality requirements of the current ISO 17225-3 and the DINplus wood briquettes certification . Furthermore, the study tested whether fuel quality of wood briquettes on the German market generally increased within the last decade. Fuels were analyzed in terms of their physical and chemical fuel quality according to current ISO standards for solid biofuels. In addition, the customer information on packaging was evaluated.

Presenter's biography

Daniel Kuptz studied Forestry Science at Technical University of Munich (TUM) and did his PhD at the Chair of Ecophysiology of plants (TUM). He works as senior scientist in the department for Solid Biofuels at TFZ managing the department section "fuel quality of solid biofuels".
