Integrated Environmental and Energy Assessment of an ORC-CCHP System Using Agricultural Residues for Rural Decarbonization in Sucre, Colombia

Short Introductive summary

Agricultural residues in Colombia’s Sucre Department present significant potential for sustainable energy generation. The municipalities were grouped into North, Center, and South regions. Only the North and South exhibit intensive agricultural activity, while the Center focuses on cattle raising. This study integrates life cycle assessment (LCA) and thermodynamic simulation of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC-CCHP) system fueled by cassava, oil palm, and rice residues. Simulations in Aspen Plus V14 using R1233zd(E) and Dowtherm Q achieved electrical efficiencies of 7.13% in the North and 8.11% in the South, with trigeneration efficiencies surpassing 30%. LCA modeling in SimaPro v.9 indicated that the Northern scenario could reduce climate change impacts by 21% compared to conventional electricity. The Southern scenario revealed higher environmental burdens due to diesel consumption in straw baling. The total biomass potential of the department is estimated at 944,249 MWh/year. This capacity could supply electricity to approximately 428 households in the South and 32 in the North. The South region offers a considerable energy surplus suitable for agro-industrial expansion.
