Agro-Energy Systems in Brazil: Holistic Evaluation of Energy Crops and Thermochemical Technologies

Short Introductive summary

Agro-energy systems in Brazil integrate energy crops production with thermochemical conversion to electricity, addressing fossil fuel dependence and soil degradation. This study focused exclusively on land areas unsuitable for agriculture as well as degraded regions. It also accounted for the logistics involved in collecting, transporting, and storing biomass derived from energy crops, specifically elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and eucalyptus. Using eucalyptus and elephant grass, theoretical potentials reach 8–17 EJ year-1. Gasification with internal combustion engines showed the highest efficiency, while large-scale projects (1 MW) proved most financially viable. Results highlight technical feasibility, competitive costs, and the need for supportive policies to ensure sustainability.
