Water-Food-Energy (WFE) Nexus in Brazil and Assessment of Its Relationship with Bioenergy and Biofuels

Short Introductive summary

This study investigates the Water–Food–Energy (WFE) nexus in Brazil, focusing on its relationship with bioenergy and biofuels. By applying GIS-based spatial analysis and a suite of WFE indicators, including water footprints, energy return on water invested (ERoWI), food–land displacement indices, and resilience scores, the research evaluates trade-offs and synergies across water resources, agricultural production, and bioenergy. Special attention is given to advanced biofuel pathways such as sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), which may reduce land-use conflicts and enhance resource efficiency.
