Yeasts for the Control of Toxigenic Aspergillus Flavus and Protection of Zea Mays L. Biomass

Short Introductive summary

Yeasts are biological control agents of toxigenic fungi such as Aspergillus flavus, which negatively affect the quality, safety, and utilization of the lignocellulosic biomass of Zea mays L. “maize” during postharvest storage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of yeasts as biocontrol agents against toxigenic A. flavus associated with maize grains. In in vivo assays, yeast application on maize grains significantly reduced A. flavus growth and total aflatoxin contamination. In conclusion, Meyerozyma caribbica 11A represents a promising biofungicide for the protection of food biomass under sustainable agricultural practices.
