The maritime sector’s decarbonization under FuelEU Maritime and RED II/III creates a near-term demand for advanced, drop-in liquid fuels that can be deployed through existing engines and bunkering infrastructure. This extended abstract presents PyroFriction, a continuous low-temperature catalytic biomass depolymerization technology that converts non-food biomass residues into a high-quality bio-oil suitable for direct blending with marine diesel without requiring engine or infrastructure modification. Operational data from an EU demonstration plant are analyzed alongside scale-up considerations, feedstock flexibility, and regulatory alignment, positioning PyroFriction as a competitive advanced biofuel pathway for producers seeking pragmatic industrial deployment.
