Toward Synergistic Valorisation of Birchwood: Tuning XOS Production and Cellulose Accessibility Via Steam Explosion

Short Introductive summary

Xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) derived from lignocellulosic biomass are high-value bio-based compounds with increasing relevance in integrated biorefineries, particularly for applications such as sustainable crop protection. In this context, this work investigates steam-explosion pretreatment of birchwood as a fractionation strategy to enable the cascade valorization of lignocellulosic components. The approach aims to generate XOS-rich liquid streams while preserving solid fractions suitable for further biochemical and thermochemical conversion, supporting the development of multiproduct biorefinery concepts.
