Valorization of Dehesa Pruning Residues as Feedstocks for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Precursors

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) derived from lignocellulosic biomass are a key pathway to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector. Mediterranean dehesa systems generate significant amounts of underutilized pruning residues, representing a promising feedstock for biorefineries. In this context, this work investigates steam-explosion pretreatment of dehesa pruning residues, focusing on the influence of key process variables—such as particle size reduction, processing temperature, —on the production of fermentable sugar streams for microbial oil and carotenoids production within a multiproduct biorefinery approach.
