Regional Timber Value Chains for Sustainable Development : A Socio-Economic Perspective from South Korea

Short Introductive summary

This study investigates the socio-economic impacts of regional timber value chains using a regional input–output model, with a focus on Chuncheon City, South Korea. To capture the economic dynamics of timber-related industries, industrial sectors were reclassified and regional characteristics were incorporated using the location quotient method. A value chain scenario was constructed in which timber produced in a regional forest management zone is processed in a local wood industry complex and subsequently utilized within the same region. The results indicate that regional timber utilization generates positive economic multiplier effects and employment creation. In particular, the integration of production, processing, and utilization within a region strengthens inter-industry linkages and enhances local economic benefits. The findings suggest that expanding regional timber utilization can contribute to local economic development while supporting the transition toward sustainable resource use.
