Turning Sunflower Residual Biomass into Valuable Resources Through Advanced Pretreatment Strategies

Sunflower residual biomass shows strong potential for valorization within sustainable biorefineries. This study evaluates innovative fractionation strategies combining intensified technologies (microwave and Tornado-Carousel systems) with green solvent systems to efficiently separate biomass into its main components: cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and extractives. Two pretreatment methods were tested to enhance delignification and enzymatic saccharification, using environmentally friendly solvents such as deep eutectic solvents, ionic liquids, and organosolv processes. The approach improves processing efficiency, scalability, and sustainability. Results showed significant improvements compared to untreated biomass, achieving ~75% delignification and recovery yields of 41% for cellulose and 63% for xylan. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential of these technologies for producing high-value bioproducts and advancing integrated biorefinery concepts.
