Straw Insulation for Retrofitting Housing in Germany by Mapping the Bioregion: Knowledge System, Actor Networks, and Biomass Potential

This research investigates the limited adoption of straw insulation in Germany, particularly in retrofit contexts, from a system-level perspective. It examines how knowledge is structured, mediated, and accessed across professional and non-expert actors, identifying key barriers in connectivity, alignment, and accessibility. By applying a bioregional perspective, the study highlights how regional conditions shape knowledge systems and influence adoption. The findings suggest that participatory and self-build (DIY) approaches can support more accessible and context-specific implementation of bio-based construction practices.

Yanlin Liu is a PhD candidate in architecture at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Her research focuses on biomaterial-based, low-tech thermal retrofitting in rural Germany, exploring agricultural byproducts, circular construction, and participatory building approaches.
