Influence of Biochar Feedstock and Dosage on Sulfur Dynamics and Buffering Behavior in Anaerobic Digestion

Short Introductive summary

Biochar supplementation in anaerobic digestion was evaluated using wood- and grass-derived materials at different dosages to assess their effects on hydrogen sulfide formation and buffering behavior. Methane production was not affected; however, wood-derived biochar achieved up to 49.9% reduction in H?S, while grass-derived biochar enhanced buffering capacity and reduced volatile fatty acids. The results demonstrate that biochar can selectively improve biogas quality and process stability, depending on feedstock and dosage, supporting its potential as a targeted additive in anaerobic digestion systems.
