Multi-site Biomethane Production Optimization with Shared Feedstock Sourcing

The optimization of biomethane production relies heavily on feedstock sourcing decisions. Traditionally, these decisions are addressed at the individual site level, with each production unit optimizing its feedstock mix independently. However, such local approaches may fail to capture system-level opportunities, particularly when multiple production sites operate in geographical proximity. This study proposes a multi-site optimization framework for biomethane production based on joint feedstock sourcing. The approach explicitly integrates biological, technical, regulatory, and economic constraints and aims to maximize the joint profit of multiple production sites. Through a case study involving two neighboring biomethane plants, the analysis evaluates the economic impact of shared feedstock sourcing compared to independent site-level optimization.
