Industrial Biogas Production and Usage in India
Short Introductive summary
India’s industrial biogas sector is rapidly expanding, driven by strong government support and ambitious targets to establish 5,000 Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants with a production capacity of 15 MMTPA. Supported by initiatives such as SATAT and CBG blending obligations, the sector already counts 1,782 registered projects, including 206 operational plants and 329 under construction. The industry is expected to play a major role in India’s energy transition and circular economy by reducing LNG imports, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, limiting biomass burning, and generating significant economic benefits, including rural employment and foreign exchange savings. In addition to clean fuel production, CBG plants also generate organic fertilizers that support sustainable agriculture and soil health. With increasing infrastructure development, growing private investment, and expanding demand from industrial and gas distribution sectors, industrial biogas is becoming a key component of India’s energy security and net-zero strategy.
